JDM / Tuner Wheels originally started in Japan, the land of the first street modified cars. Just by looking at the JDM acronym and knowing that it stands for Japan Domestic Market, you can pretty much see where it all started. Back in the early 90’s, the largest wheels were 16 inches, and they did not have too many tire choices for any larger diameter wheels. These were times before modification parts were readily accessible and die-hard fans were cutting springs in their garages to lower their cars. Manufacturers did not focus on wheels during this time and everyone was happy with smaller diameter wheels and tires, but the die-hard fans were going out of their way to make their vehicles as unique as possible. As trends changed and racing technology trickled down to the mass market, bigger diameter, light-weight wheels were reaching the aftermarket. Tire technology improved making it possible to have low profile tires that performed well in all conditions. These two combinations ignited the trend of lowered vehicles with aggressive fitment that many customers want for their vehicles.
